Teflon is a Portland, OR based rap duo consisting of Da Real J-Rocc & Jokey Lok. Using remnants of the real natural west coast hip hop style, they have been delivering real lyrics coupled with funky beats for years.
Tell us where you’re from?
503rd, yah heard? That’s Portland, Oregon for those who don’t know.
How do you feel about our music scene here in Portland?
It’s cool. There is a lot going on and a lot of variety. However, right now we are focused on unity of the town. There is a lot of talent and a lot of good music, we just need that local support to move forward! If we can get everyone in the town on the same page, we can do big things!
What’s the story behind your stage name origins?
Let’s make a long story short. We were originally Bulletproof when we were with a previous production company. We didn’t want to have any repercussions later after severing ties, so we decided to change our name to Teflon. Bulletproof vests are made of Teflon, so it just seemed to fit!
I’m sure there’s a story behind the track “Northwest Coastin,” want to elaborate for us?
Oh ok, unification. We noticed there was a high school mentality with everyone in our area acting like they can’t do music with each other. We don’t understand that because we are all on the same boat, trying to get to the same place. Northwest is a whole movement between Oregon and Washington State, so what better then to have our own area on the map, “The North West.” Also we feel as though Oregon was never a part of the “west coast.” When we say that we mean that we never felt as though we were embraced by the west coast music scene, and really, that we never got recognition from the rest of the nation either. So we gave ourselves our own brand. North West Coastin.
What is your latest project?
We are finishing up our untitled EP. We already dropped two singles from the EP titled 503rd Ya Heard and They Know That. In February we will be dropping the last single from the same EP titled, Interstate ft. C-Twice.
Where can we find your music?
CD Baby.com, iTunes, Xbox Live, Google Play, Spotify, and more. We like to get our music out on as many platforms as we can.
What producers have you worked with in the past?
Mr. Devil, Monk Mike, Hush, Craze Mc, Zany the Mic Smith, Minds of a Criminal, Elijah.
Producers you’re currently working with?
A Lace, Mr. Wright, Trap Master Productions, Wolverine.
What producers do you look forward to working with in the future?
We are looking for new hot talent.
How would you describe your style and sound?
Jokey Loc: I would have to describe our sound as, tree roastin’, drink toastin’, high postin’, North West Coastin.
Da Real J-Rocc: We make real good music. Something for every occasion. North West music with a gangsta twist.
If you could choose 2 artists and 1 producer in today’s music world to work with, who would you choose?
Well we aren’t going to agree on this so – Da Real J-Rocc: I choose Mustard for a producer, and for the artists, I choose E-40 and TI. Jokey Loc: I wanna work with IamSu and E-40, and for a Producer I wanna work with Dr. Dre, of course.
What do you think about the current state of Hip-Hop?
Jokey Loc: It sucks.
Da Real J-Rocc: I’m not dressing like that! There are new rules.
Jokey loc: Yeah you’re right! There’s new rules, new attitudes and there is a new dress code.
Da Real J-Rocc & Jokey Loc: AND I AINT WITH THAT!
Da Real J-Rocc: And I’m tired of hearing about what the hell everyone got. They gonna make me take it back to ’95. AND STOP LYING! IT’S STILL TRICKIN EVEN IF YOU GOT IT!
